The secret to publishing or producing your own self-published materials is just to do a little bit every single day. One of the successful authors that we know, Dan Kennedy, publishes many products every year. People are always coming up to him and saying “Hey, Dan, what’s the secret of your success?” He’s been doing it for enough years now where he’s pretty good at it, but the truth is he forces himself to sit down and create material every day for at least 45 minutes to as much as 90 minutes a day. First thing in the morning, no matter where he is, seven days a week, whether he’s home or on vacation - He forces himself to do it. That’s what you have to do! If you just do a little bit, in a short period of time, it can really add up. Just a page a day, that’s 365 pages a year.

Let’s look at another example. Minnesota is big into winter sports including hunting, fishing, and ice fishing. We’ve done that a couple of times. It’s not that fun because you are sitting out there, below zero, in a little hut the size of an outhouse dropping your line down into the ice that you dug three or four feet deep. But there are people interested in that type of activity.

Minnesota is also noted for its wild honey and wild rice, much of it cultivated, again, by the Native Americans. That could be a great regional item.

The South is rich in so many things. There’s the heritage of our southern states, including of course the very popular memorabilia and collectible items from the Civil War. That’s another thought.

If you’re in New England of course, there is so much rich tradition with the founding of America, the Colonies, and all sorts of interesting things from maple syrup from Vermont to all sorts of unique products.

Next you tell the local supporters of your local charity how to bid on-line. You show them how to get on eBay, for example, if that’s the auction you’ve chosen to post this charity auction on. You tell them to search for the key word, which of course, would be the name of the charity. Now they’ll bring up a list of all the items that are in that charity auction.

This makes it convenient for local supporters because they can sit at home in the evening and bid. They don’t have to give up a night to go to the charity auction and actually be there to place bids. And, it attracts national bidders because they see that it’s a charity and there’s no reserve.

People that are looking for antique baby carriages, to keep with that same example, could be looking through the auction site for them and up a message or page that says “Charity Auction” - and there’s no reserve. In their minds, this plants the idea they’re going to get it pretty cheap. They can probably bid less than they normally would, but it still would bid that item up higher than it might in a local auction.

This is your selling point to the local charity - “I’m going to get you a lot more bidders. I’m going to have the items bid up a lot higher and get you some more money for your charity auction, for less trouble. You don’t even have to take an evening away to come in and host this whole thing, and actually raise more money for the charity.” And all you want is a small percentage.

You can actually have a website set up so that it requires a name, ID, and a password. Set up your site so that the information you’ve got asks for an ID and a password. Then, send to these opt-in e-mail lists saying they’ve been pre-approved. You need this password.

If you are running an ad in a magazine that’s going out to a million people, and you have honed and perfected that sales message, then that one sales message is appearing before a million people.

The way we look at affiliate programs is very positive, and we’re sure they are great if you get hundreds and thousands of different sites to promote what you have, but we’re going to take a little bit different path here. We’re going to talk about using a little time and effort to get the very best web sites to sell your products and services. That means you have to spend some time finding out where the action is.

There are so many web sites today... We’re not even interested in joint marketing with a web site that gets two visits every week. Or five a month. We’re dealing with about fifty different individuals who are selling our products on the Internet, and on their web sites. But we have noticed in the past few months that only three of them are really sending any orders.

It’s the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rules says you get 80% of your business from 20% of your customers.

Well, we’ve found the 80/20 rule really is a 5/95 rule and that is - 5% of your customers yield about 95% of your business in repeat orders and constant business. So what we think you should do is isolate a few dozen super web sites who sell items that are similar, but not identical, of course, to what you have.

Really go after these people. You want them to recommend your product, and you’ll pay them a nice commission of forty, or fifty, or even sixty percent. Go after some of the heavy hitters.

You need to give them a very, very good commission because, if they like your product, they will promote it. You want them to be well compensated. If you are selling information like so many of us are, you’ve got big enough mark ups to give the fifty and sixty percent.

I’ve titled this article “Turning Worth Into Wealth On The Web.” If you have a web site - and you surely should - there are two methods you should use to drive people to your site.

1. You should be promoting your product or service offline.
You could do it in print, or maybe even on radio and TV (which are getting cheaper) to drive people directly to your site

2. You should be promoting your product or service online.
This can be done many different ways - free publicity (perhaps an e-zine), advertising - basically doing everything you can (including using search engines) to get people to visit your site.

The key to achieving success is to use key words in your ads, links, and search engine submission. There are so many choices on the web today and so much noise out there that you haven’t got a chance unless you can stand out from the crowd. Your ads, free publicity, and essentially everything you run has to have a USP - A Unique Selling Position to get attention for you!

In direct response marketing we say that we have to stop a reader in his or her tracks and make them look at our ad or message. This is also absolutely true on the Internet! You’ve got to grab those eyeballs and stop them from clicking through!

We knew a man involved in regular mail order many years ago that was putting the word “sex” in large type in his ad. That didn’t work very well though, because he followed that by saying, “Now that I’ve got your attention, I wan to sell you gold and silver.” People resented it!

On the other hand, we knew another fellow who was publishing a gold and silver newsletter and was thinking about using “sex” in the headline. We told him, “That won’t work!” Still, he went out, got a photographer and a pretty model in a bathing suit, and had her surrounded by gold bullion and silver coins... and that did work! This points out that sometimes there are different ways to go.

The best way to go, though, is to use some key words that really grab attention. If you have a home business offer, you could possibly say, “Here’s how to make $370.00 a day at home!” If you were selling male potency pills, such as the new herbal pills, you might want to say, “Works better than Viagra... and it’s safe!”

On our Internet Auction course we worked on a while ago, a great stopper would be “Make up to $600,000 a year, at home, with Internet auctions.” We do know of a couple in a small town in Wyoming that really is making $600,000 a year in Internet auctions.

I could go on and on, but I hope you get the idea. You must rise above the highs. You must get above the noise to grab attention!

Now I want to share a few things that are very interesting and very, very powerful. These are things I just learned about in the past week or so. Let’s talk about search engines.

With millions of web sites out there, and tens of thousands more coming online every single day, it is becoming more and more difficult to get in front of the pack... or even to be in the top 50 searches under any category.
Some time ago I opened an Internet search engine and typed in the words “making money at home”... and there were over 3,000 hits!

If you submitted something on home business, within a week or so you might be number 1,012 - and that’s not good! Yes, you can submit to the leading search engines, but don’t rely too heavily on this.

Here is an interesting new twist that you may be able to use to really get rich on the web. There are several leading site search engines that are accepting key words and key phrases on a “pay per hit” basis, the biggest of which is goto.com. This is one of the six most powerful search engines on the Internet. There are several others.

The key here is to give them a word or a phrase that you would like to be put under a specific category, and to tell them exactly what you’ll pay per hit. In other words, for everyone they send to you (which they keep track of, by the way,) how much will you pay?

You can bid as low as one cent, or you can bid $1.00, or even up to $5.00. There are some people paying $5.00 for specific phrases to be on this site. Now, I realize you probably can’t afford to pay that much, but you could pay a penny, a dime, or maybe a quarter.

You could pick something other than “home business” - “kitchen table business” for example. Or you might use “kitchen table money maker.” No one else is using that, and even though it’s not the first word they’ll see under “home business,” or “making money at home,” maybe you’ll be in the top 50!

I’m just using these as examples. You might submit a bid stating that you’ll pay fifteen cents for every one they send you. If you have that, and you’ve gotten them to agree, it would probably be a good deal if you were selling a course for $100.00 or more. Even if you only sold one out of every hundred people that came through (and that’s what you might sell...one out of a hundred, only), you could pay fifteen cents to get a hundred dollars or $99.50!

Now, I am going to give you a list of these search engines that will let you pay them per click through - or in other words, to send people to your site. Goto.com is the biggest so far. Now, here are some of the others:

You can submit one or more key words to them ...you can send a dozen if you want, and you could say, “I will pay five cents for every one you send to me that clicks on this word.” Or ten cents, or fifteen cents, or twenty cents, or whatever you want! I think it is a very interesting proposition. It will not work for everyone, but for some people it might be a real big winner!

Personally, I like the idea. I like the idea of paying for other prospects, because if I figure all the time and energy I spend on working up search engine information and fiddling with that, then leaving it up to a great deal of chance, I’d like to pay for position because you know exactly what position you’re going to get and what a lead is going to cost you.

We were evaluating a product recently, and we looked at goto.com and saw what we would have to pay. In that category the top lead price being paid for the number one position was twenty-five cents. All I had to do was sit down and figure out if I could afford a twenty-five cent lead cost. Or could I perhaps have been able to afford a twenty-six cent lead cost?

Yes, it would make really good sense to pay twenty-six cents for a lead! I knew then that if I decided on that product for twenty-six cents a lead I could be in the number one position on that search engine. That makes it possible for me to evaluate a situation and proceed if it makes dollar and cent sense for me... so I like it!

I would recommend you really watch your budget, because some people have more money to spend than others. The beauty of this system is the fact that you’re not going to pay anything if it doesn’t work, and the tract leads to you, which is always a good situation. You’re not paying unless there is a result!

The only down-side is the fact that you have to make sure when you get leads you are converting the right percentage of them to sales.

Of course, the bottom line comes down to the fact that without leads you make no sales, so you have to weigh that out. Just remember that you are exposing yourself to potential expense to be in that top listing.

If you’ve got the money this is a great idea. If you don’t have a lot of money to risk, you want to very closely watch the reporting on how large a bill you are racking up and what result it is getting you. But it is worth testing!

I think it may be important for you not to pursue the most hits, because if you’re paying a quarter and you get a thousand hits, you’ll owe them $250.00. You have to put the money up with a credit card, such as $100.00 in advance, or put your card number up where they can start banging away at it.

The key here is if you use this interesting and potentially profitable system, you want to have less hits - but you want them to be very specific. Words like “home business” are not necessarily even good, because they’re too broad. “Selling information at home” would be more specific and give you a chance, to get less hits than “home business,” but then you pay less for the hits and perhaps you’ll convert many more hits.

You don’t have to go for the number one position. On goto.com between the number one position and the 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th position there is generally a huge difference. On one category the number one position is $1.25 and the number 11 or 12 position was a penny.

You can try it at the bottom line, since you don’t know what the quantities are going to be. You’ll see what it is going to cost you, how much traffic it is delivering, and how many prospects are converting. Then, depending on what you can afford, you move right on up the ladder.

Plus, some of these services have a deposit program where you can put up some money... I think I saw one with a minimum of $25.00...and you get click-throughs until your money is gone. That’s a great way to limit your exposure.
At that point you can say, “I’m willing to see what $100.00 gets me.” Then you can see what kind of sales you make from that hundred dollars. If you spend a hundred, get click-throughs galore, sell $300.00 worth of stuff, and it only costs you $50.00 to send it, you’re money ahead! Perhaps it’s time to raise it to $250.00. But if you spend $200.00 and only get $50.00 worth of sales, you had better re-evaluate how you’re doing it.

I like the idea of doing some research on goto.com and some of the other sites and seeing what turns up. You could try different categories. You could try a more specific category where somebody else may not even be there, and for a penny a hit you’re number one.

You’re not going to get as many hits because it is much more specific, but they will be more qualified prospects. You can toy with that, and I think, if I’m not wrong, you can certainly be on more than one category.

And remember, goto.com has the unique ability where you can search under the key words and they will tell you how many hits went to each of those words during the previous month... so you’re not fishing totally blind! They’ll tell you how many people searched on “home business,” how many people searched on “kitchen table business,” etc. so you do have an estimate of the number of searches for the previous month before you make a bid.

Just Sit Back And Let The Report

One thing we recommend doing if you want to do this is you might charge people a set-up fee. Not only would they pay per view or per click through, but you might charge them $25 or $50 - really whatever you want - to set the system up to be a sponsor. That will allow you to get some profit right up front. Then you might charge just a small fee per click through. It could be a penny, two pennies, ten cents, twenty-five cents, fifty cents, or a dollar. It really just depends on what you want to do and what people in your market are paying right now for click throughs. It really is up to you as to how much you want to charge.

Next, you need to have a place on your web site for people to read about the free information, or, again, if you want to do e-mail marketing you can send out e-mails and offer the free report via the e-mail. Then, they’re going to click the button and instantly the information is going to be automatically sent to them.

Basically, they’re going to click to get the information and then it’s automatically going to be sent to them. Within a matter of minutes they will have your information. The great thing about this is, once you set up the initial information, your free report and the ads are sent by auto-responder. All you have to do is sit back and collect the money.

If your report is going to sell the product on your web site so you’ll have that money coming in, but you also have the advertising money that is due every week, or every month, or however you want to set it up, you will actually bill or maybe they’ll give you a credit card right up front, and you’ll just automatically deduct for their fees for every click through that they had.

You can have lots of kinds of free information if you don’t have a product you’re selling and you want to just give out free information and use this to actually make money with the advertising only. You could give out lots of information on lots of different topics from making money, gardening tips, parenting tips, golf tips - there are many types of information you can put in there if you only wanted to use it to deliver the free information - and then deliver the advertisements as well! You can do that as well.

There are many different ways to do this. The best way, in our opinion, is to actually use it to drive people back to your web site to make money with the products. Not only will you make money every time someone actually does decide to buy your product, but you’ll also make money every time someone doesn’t buy your product because you’re selling advertising based on them clicking that button to get that report and information via auto-responder.

Worth Of Any Business!
 

The best way to determine the value of any business you are interested in can be found in statistical periodicals. They will tell you what businesses in the mail-order categories should do, in terms of gross income, net income, percentage of profits, etc. This is how to figure the exact worth of any business.

Some publications will show you a complete compilation of statistics on mail-order companies, including average incomes, balance sheets, and other financial data.

When you visit your local library, ask for the Annual Statement Studies, published by Robert Morris Associates. Many loan institutions use this reference guide before making a business loan.

Predicasts Forecasts, published by Predicasts, is a quarterly publication containing compiled information on forecasts that have been projected on U.S. businesses and product service lines. This reference guide is an excellent way for entrepreneurs to pinpoint trends and cycles.

Check to see if the business you want to buy has a net profit ratio and annual earning compatible with the business norms of your field. Bankers who use statistical reference manuals and are knowledgeable about the type of return a business should generate, are more apt to commit on such a loan request.

Many trade journals also publish information on sales and profits, and what the averages should be in certain categories. The Encyclopedia of Associations, published by Gale Research, is an excellent reference guide that lists thousands of associations.

This association can be of help by furnishing you with mail order statistical information. Just write and tell them you are interested in purchasing a mail order (or any other) business and would like to receive any data they may have. Personalization has been an extremely powerful marketing tactic since its inception. When used correctly, it has helped marketers bring in many thousands of dollars in direct mail . . . and it could do the same on websites and in electronic media as well! This can really multiply your sales and profits!

Personalization is, broadly defined, tailoring a sales message for one specific customer or prospect. Typically, the more mailings are sent out, the harder this can be. But, there are some very simple tactics that can be used to keep the level of personalization high with high-volume media.

Use the customer or prospect’s name, and when you address them in the copy, address them by their name. You see this quite often with direct mailings. When it comes to websites, there is technology available for webmasters that allows the Internet surfer to enter their name before they enter the site. Then, when the surfer enters the site, their name will appear in the copy where it’s supposed to . . . instant personalization! In fact, the sites we’ve seen with this technology actually store the names of those who visit, so whenever they come back, they are welcomed back personally, with their name . . . every time without re-entering it!

Personalization is a very important marketing tool. It identifies the person receiving the message as an individual, as a person to be communicated with and dealt with one-on-one. It will give them a feeling that they are independent and important.

That prospect knows in the back of his or her head that your sales message was concocted with many, many people in mind. But personalization gives that sales message extra power to break through that wall of resistance by painting a picture of you dealing with that person as an individual rather than as a name on a mailing label. With good personalization, that prospect will still regard your message seriously even though he or she knows it was created to go to thousands of people. It’s subliminal - and it’s a bit of ego stroking.

Proven Method Gets People To Pay You

In the past we’ve used print advertising in these little card decks or what are also known as card packs. They’re basically a pack of maybe fifty or one hundred different adver-tisements each on its own little postcard size card. It’s all sealed in a plastic wrap so you can open it up and flip through each of them.

What we’ve done in the past (and it has been very successful in terms of getting free advertising) is offer co-op advertising. Many of the cards in these card decks can be very expensive. For example, if you contact these card deck companies they’ll sell you a card for around $1,500 or $1,600 for just one mailed out one time to 100,000 people. This is probably the lowest amount we have seen. The price goes up from there if you want additional colors on it or if you want it to go out to additional people. It can get up into the $2,000, $3,000, or $4,000 range. It’s very expensive advertising.

At the same time, it’s very effective advertising. What you can do to get your ad free of charge in these card decks is actually sell ads on one of these cards and have the advertisers pay for the entire cost of the card! This is a proven method to get people to pay you tons of money to advertise your own website and it’s so simple and easy, you won’t believe it! Here’s an example of how you would do it and here’s how we’ve done it in the past.

You would measure the card, and you would figure out how many ads can be placed on each side of a card before you sell any of the places. Let’s say you want to make it pretty simple, so you just split up each side into four different quarters. You can sell a quarter of that card for a certain amount of money. Then, you go out and you can find advertisers out there that would not be able to spend $1,400, $1,500, or $1,600 on their own card in a card deck, but they’d be more than happy to spend $200 or $300 on a smaller ad on your card.

By selling all the spaces on one card, you can not only break even on the cost of the card but you can actually make a profit on the cost of the card. Let’s say that the cost of your card is $1,400. There are card decks where you can actually get a deal for $1,400. Let’s say you have four ad spaces on one side and four ad spaces on the other side, which is eight spaces total. You sell each of them for $200, which is really a good deal. Now, you’ve got cash in hand in the amount of $1,600.

Now the card is completely paid for by those advertisers and you pocketed $200 in cash. You’re saying to yourself, “Okay, where does the free advertising come in? I mean, if their ads are taking up the card, where does mine come in?” Well, you don’t split up the entire card. What you want to do on your card is give yourself space at the top, middle, or bottom of each side. You can really decide. If you take a look at some of these card decks, you’ll see people using the same message. They’ve got an ad that runs all the way across the top and it advertises their website. On the other side they might have an ad that runs all the way across the bottom.

Basically, it just includes the website address and a little bit more information about it, but it’s free of charge. You’ve sold most of each card side in advertising. Your ad on the top, bottom, or middle basically runs free of charge. In the past, we’ve done this. In one card deck, we had seven different cards running. Each would have cost us $1,500, but we got all of them free because we sold so much advertising that the advertisers were paying for all of the card! Our ads just rode along free at the top and the bottom of each of those cards.

This is something that is not only limited to card decks. You could do it with the cable classified channel. You could also do it in terms of print advertising. A lot of people cannot afford full page ads in magazines. Let’s say instead of going for the full page ad, you break it up into quarters or you break it up into one inch spaces. What you’ll find is if you break it up into one inch spaces and sell off those spaces, you could have more than enough money to pay for the full page ad and give yourself an ad way up at the top or way down at the bottom.

When using this technique of co-op advertising you’re going to find that you can get a lot of advertising free of charge whether it’s in print publications, T.V., or card decks. Whenever you find an advertising medium, you might want to think before you get out your checkbook. You might want to think before you put out a dollar, “How can I turn this into an advertising co-op? How can I get some free advertising from this?”

“How to get up to one million people on the Internet to send you a dollar each.” It sounds hard to believe. People in direct mail always joke about it. If there was only a way to get a million people to send you a dollar each, you’d make a million dollars. And it never happens.

But, one man on the Internet is doing it! We’re going to tell you his secret. Then we’re going to tell you how you can actually apply it to your situation, and to your product, to make it work for you, too!

There is actually a site on the Internet founded because a gentleman got an idea for a way to make money without much effort. And all he did was put up a web site that delivers a “joke of the day.” His web site delivers one joke every day. So either he is a really funny guy or he gets help from lots of other people. Actually, from what we hear, people send him jokes and he publishes the best ones and sends them out via e-mail to people who receive the “joke of the day.”

People actually pay him, in this situation, a dollar to receive the jokes in their e-mail every day. It kind of brightens people’s day. People are busy, they have a lot of stuff on their minds, and to get a joke in their e-mail when they get to work every day is refreshing for them.

He had a lot of people sign up for this service really fast and made a lot of money quick - and all he is doing is delivering the “joke of the day!”

Perhaps, that market is cornered now. There probably isn’t too much room on the Internet for a joke of the day, but there are lots of ways you can use this idea that he had to make money with your products. And we’re just going to share a couple of them with you.

First of all, what he did is not only sell a joke, but he also sold advertising. There were a lot of people signed up for this service. He had a million people and maybe even more. He had a million people sign up to receive this joke of the day in their e-mail every day.

Now, granted, it’s not a targeted market. Lots of people like jokes. But, the right product could sell really well to this group of a million or more people that are receiving the joke of the day in their e-mail box every morning. So he went out to advertisers, maybe someone like amazon.com who sells books.

There are lots of places on the Internet that are generic on specific non-niche markets where he could actually get them to pay him to send their advertisement out. A banner ad or maybe just a classified ad in that e-mail so that when people get their joke, not only do they see the joke but they also see a word from our sponsor.

Another option would be an “advertiser for the day” and he might have a few of those in each of those e-mails every day. But that means 365 days a year, he’s got people not only sending him a dollar to receive his joke of the day, but he also has businesses, whether they’re on the Internet or not on the Internet, in this e-mail that he sends out 365 days a year.

Now, think about it. We don’t know how much he was charging, but if you have a million people who are eager to receive your e-mail every day, how much can you charge businesses who want to advertise in that e-mail that you are sending to a million plus people? That’s a lot of people getting that e-mail every day - and you can make a lot of money that way.

Perhaps you don’t have a joke of the day that you can send out. There are lots of ways you can take advantage of this idea. For example, you could have the gardening tip of the day. You could have a web site that is geared towards gardeners, and every day you give a gardening tip of the day. You get people to sign up, to send you a dollar to receive a gardening tip of the day.

Maybe you do a recipe of the day. Maybe you have a recipe card that you send out via e-mail every day, and every day you get people to contact you if they want to receive this recipe.

Perhaps you don’t want to charge for it. That’s fine. You can make money only off the advertising if you so wish.
If you have a million people sign up to receive your e-mail, your tip of the day every day, how much can you charge for advertising? Quite a bit ...

You can do it with gardening, you can do it with recipes, there are lots of different subjects that you could cover, where you can just send people a tip of the day.

Now, the great thing about doing something like this is that you can have everybody else do all the work for you. For example, if you’re doing a recipe of the day, you can massage people’s egos. They like to see their name in print. So instead of actually having to submit all these recipes that you come up with on your own, all you have to do is, within each e-mail that you send out, you can say, “We’re accepting recipes. Get your recipe published as our pick of the day, our recipe of the day.”

People will submit their recipes and you can just fill them in. Just e-mail their recipe out. Give them credit for having the recipe.

And you’ve got people actually giving you the content for your e-mail every day! You don’t even have to do the work.

You might need some of your own recipes to start it off, but once you get going, and people know that they can submit their recipe, or their gardening tip, or whatever it may be and get it actually e-mailed to hundreds of thousands or even millions of people, people will get excited about that, and they will be more than happy to submit their best recipes, their best gardening tips, or whatever they have!

Here’s another thing about competition: the people, when people buy one thing, chances are they’ll buy from you if they’ll buy from your competitor. From what we’ve seen, there is plenty of business to go around. There’s plenty of business for everyone.

If somebody buys from you once, they’ll buy from you again and again, and they’ll buy from your competitors, and they’re insatiable. For years, we have rented our mailing list out to other companies who sell the same types of products and services that we sell, and we get additional revenue every month from renting our mailing list out.

Make prospects a legitimate irresistible offer. Give them value that no one else is giving. That can be a better discount, more bonuses, a greater warranty, etc. Then, give them an inducement that makes it irresistible.

For example, you could give something worth a certain amount of money if they purchase your product. If it is not what they thought it would be, they not only get their money back, but they also get to keep the free bonus just for their trouble. This sales technique has value in any business. There may be a few people who will take advantage of a good thing, but they will be a very small percentage.

Some marketers will even make a blind offer. They may say something like, “I’m going to offer you something worth $100. If you don’t like it, I’ll give you $125 back.” Again, some people will take advantage of that type of offer. But, overall, the offer will be so appealing that people will feel compelled to respond, people who ordinarily would not.

But, remember, if your product is not worthwhile, if the item offered isn’t a quality product, or does not fulfill the promise you made, then you can, and should, expect a loss.

In a blind offer, you don’t just come right out and tell the prospects exactly what it’s all about. You tease your readers and only tell them just enough about what you have to offer so that you make them curious. Then, if they want more information, you tell them how to get it. This is why blind offers will make you rich!

You have to paint a picture that is not complete unless they have some sort of transaction with you. This creates a vacuum in their mind, a topic that they want to have completed. Then, they will send away for your sales literature, your free cassette tape, your free video tape, or whatever you plan to send them. It is important to note, though, that this technique only works for some products and services in some markets.

What is the most important thing that can make you millions of dollars in direct mail? The answer is - the mailing list! You can have the greatest sales material in the world, but you will never be able to realize the real profit potential of that sales material unless you send it to the right prospects.

In direct mail, there is a very honored belief called the “40/40/20 Rule.” 40% of the success of a mailing list comes from the list, 40% comes from the specific offer itself, and 20% comes from the sales material.

For example, if you are selling a book on stamp collecting, you should target your mailings at people interested in collecting stamps, or at least a current collectors’ mailing list. Do not mail merely to general book buyers. If you are selling sports equipment, you should mail to specialized lists of sportsmen and women, not merely to the general public. The Internet is a niche marketer’s dream. So what is the best niche for you? The answer: You do what you love. You sell something you love.

Remember, there are millions of people that are just like you. The easiest way to start is, since you know yourself, you can know these millions of other people. You know their language. You know what they’re interested in. You know what their problems are.

If you have the same hobbies or the same interests as these people, then you’ll know how to reach them to sell them the same kinds of things that interest you. That’s the closest, easiest formula for success. Sell something you love.
